With so many different health care plans available for purchase, it is extremely difficult to even know where to begin when considering which health care plan is best suited for you. From dental, to vision, there are so many factors to take into consideration when choosing a good health care plan which will not only meet your needs, but is also affordable. Below are a three tips to take into consideration when picking a health care plan.
Tip one: Consider the premium
As a general rule when considering health care plans, the lower the premium means the higher out of pocket expenses you will pay whenever you need medical care. Conversely, the higher the premium you pay means you will pay lower out of pocket expenses when you need medical care. The first thing you need to do is to take into account how often you get sick, go to the doctors, and actually seek medical attention throughout the year. If you rarely go to the doctors, a lower premium is better suited for you; however, if you go to the doctors a lot and have a chronic illness, it is better advised to pay a higher premium so you end up paying less out of pocket expenses.
Tip two: Understand your options
With the newly launched Obama Care and all the media attention health care has received in the past few years, it is hard to know where to begin when choosing the right health care plan. The most important thing anyone who is considering the purchase of health care is to know all of their options. Employers may try to get you to purchase medical care through them and your family may want you to stay with the provider you have always had, but it is important to shop around, understand all the options available to you, and to make a wise decision. Take into account if you need a PPO, HMO, or if you cannot afford insurance speak to someone about Medicaid or Medicare. Know, and research, all the options available to you so you can make the most educated decision possible.
Tip three: Stay healthy
Almost every health care plan offers drastic discounts for members who stay health. Preventable illnesses have been estimate to comprise nearly 70% of all health care costs. If your company offers a wellness program, it is wise to participate it in, as this could end up saving your hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars each year.
The more you know about health insurance plans the better off you will be. You have the power when choosing which insurance plan is best suited for you, so even though you may love your current doctor, it is wise to shop around and see if there are other plans which would best meet your needs. Take into account your deductible, out of pocket expenses, and premiums and keep asking questions until you feel confident and comfortable that the health care plan you purchase will meet all of your needs and provide with you adequate coverage.
